Did you have a good, happy and positive morning? Did you know that the answer to that question not only affects your mood for the rest of the day but also has a real and quantifiable effect on your work performance and productivity?
“Decide every morning that you are in good mood”
This is how I start my morning these days and it’s working!
If the first thing you do in the morning is to grab your phone and start scrolling the Facebook/Instagram/Twitter feed or checking your emails, you’re giving yourself a serious dose of cortisol in the morning! You may wonder, what is cortisol and how does it affect me? Cortisol is a steroid-based hormone and is synthesized from cholesterol and belongs to a group of hormones called glucocorticoids. Cortisol is made in the adrenal cortex of the adrenal gland, which is near the kidney. Lost? Here is an easy explanation of how it affects you – Have you ever felt stressed out? Most of us have at one point in time. Our body responds to stress in many different ways, but one thing that all stress has in common is that it increases the level of a very powerful hormone called cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone involved in the regulation of metabolism in the cells and helps us regulate stress within the body.
I used to wake up (after hitting the snooze several times) and grab my phone from the bedside table, already stressing out about what emails I needed to answer and what appointments I had that day. It was a recipe for killing the morning vibes!!
Morning routine really defines your day. While I am always telling everyone the importance of choosing a great breakfast to start the day, getting your mindset right is even more important (especially because it affects what you put in your mouth)!
My new rule? My morning routine (or power hour) before I touch the phone. In fact, I leave it in the kitchen so I’m not tempted (and not exposing myself to extra electromagnetic fields that can interfere with our sleep).
That extra 20-30 minutes of meditation, gratitudes, spending time with family, reading and planning out my day (while sipping on coffee – avoid this if you can. I tried, but I couldn’t) not only sets my day up for massive success by creating the foundation of a healthy mindset, but it somehow slows time down! These are the 5 must do things every morning (give it a shot!) before you take up on that cell phone –
Set your intentions for the day
Take 5 deep breaths in and out
Forgive yourself for yesterdays mistakes and look forward
Smile just to flex your muscles
Your mind and mindset are a muscle. If we don’t use them, they get weak. So invest a little time each morning in feeding your mind before you feed your body. And dont forget to SMILE – It’s easy and it’s free. Emotions are reinforced by their facial expressions; this is essentially the science between “fake it until you make it.” Even on the more dreary of mornings, make an effort to smile to people around you – At the very least, it will boost someone else’s morning mood.
